More than three months after he was deported, the Chief Executive Officer of telecommunication giant MTN, Wim Vanhalleputte, resumed his duties at the company after Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni allowed his return into the country.
Taking to their official twitter handle, MTN Uganda tweeted: “CEO @wimMTNUG is back to work after the President of the Republic Of Uganda, H.E. Kaguta Museveni, exercised his executive discretion and permitted him back in the country. Wim who came with Group President ShuterRob has been welcomed by the leadership team & staff.”
Senior Presidential Secretary, Don Wanyama announced on Thursday that Mr. Vanhelleputte had been allowed into the country by the President following discussions and he was expected to resume duties immediately.
“We have been formally notified, we got a letter and it was the president who requested the minister of internal affairs to write and allow him (CEO) to come immediately and he is coming today,” MTN Uganda’s chairman, Charles Mbire, told Reuters by phone.
Vanhelleputte was deported by the East African country on February 15 due to “national security” concerns, police said at the time, without giving details.
