The declaration of a new president has brought positive reactions from Uganda. Yoweri Museveni aged 76 has retained his seat as the president. He secured this position after defeating the pop star turned musician Bobi Wine.

Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni has won a sixth term as President in office. His period is now extending his 35-year rule after this election. The election took place after one of the most violent campaigns in years, with harassment and arrests of the opposition, attacks on the media and the deaths of at least 54 people.

The 76-year-old leader, who took power in 1986, is one among Africa’s longest-serving presidents and was accused of crushing the opposition and media before one among the foremost violent election campaigns in recent years.

With 58.6 per cent of votes, Museveni won, seeing off a stiff struggle from former ragga singer Bobi Wine, 38, whose turn to politics fired up a youthful population where three quarters are under 30 years old.
