South Africa has decided to expand their vaccination campaign on Wednesday to reach to elderly people after the health workers and other frontline workers have been jabbed with the same. The country has set an aim that around 5 million people who are aged around 60 will be vaccinated by the end of June.
The health department has come up with a plan to give shots to more than 7,700 senior citizens at 102 nursing homes by the end of the week, and 50,000 by the end of May. A resident at an elderly nursing home said “each person must be given the opportunity to protect themselves. And the fact that the government is bringing us these vaccines makes it a lot easier. You have to be positive about this kind of thing and after 21 days the second dose will be given to us”. So far South Africa has reported more than 1.6 million confirmed infections and more than 55,000 deaths.
